We are Thao Quyen, Uyen Nhi, Thuy Duong and we are fresh-man students of School of Foreign Languages at Tra Vinh University. As English major students, we have many opportunities to foster our language proficiency.

One of the most effective ways for us to practice is participating in English Speaking Club (ESC). ESC is only held once a week, but we have learnt so much in every meeting. The most recent meeting that we joined was last Thursday, November 1 warmed up by Halloween festival theme. With thoughtful preparation by volunteers from America and teachers and senior students, Halloween night had attracted to attention of many students. Before starting, we watched a short film about Halloween and we guessed some famous characters in horror movies. After that, we played a few funny games organized by Ms Sachi.

From these activities, we have known that Halloween or Hallowe’en is a celebration which is held in many countries on 31 October. Halloween comes from the ancient Celtic festival Samhain. On this occasion, people dress up as characters in horrible novels or movies to frighten others and children go to their neighbour house to play ‘treat or trick’. Also at the previous ESC, we danced and sang together. It was really happy and fun.

ESC helps us know a lot of vocabularies and connect to each other by working in groups. Moreover, we feel that we have become dynamic and creative through activities. At ESC, all students enthusiastically take part in many fun and useful activities and we can improve speaking and listening skills as well. For us, ESC is an atmosphere where we call ‘studying hard, playing hard’ for everyone.

Chien, a second-year student of the School of Foreign Languages, Tra Vinh University, loved watching magic shows on TV since he was a child. At the age of fifteen, he started some simple magical performances such as making a piece of paper disappear and changing paper into money. The first audience for his successful performances was his high school classmates. On March 29th 2018 at the English Speaking Club, he again impressed his audience with his magical performance. Since then, the SFL has welcomed one more talented student in a completely new form of entertainment.

His study at TVU has been a new journey for this 20- year- old man from Cau Ngang district. He has led his life far away from his family for the first time. His passion about magical performances has never stopped. He has usually wanted to entertain himself and makes his friends happier during stressful academic work.

On March, 29th, he proved his talent by setting his hands on fire, changing paper into money and changing his T-shirt in a second. Many participants were really excited about his performances. Kim Thanh Ngan, a senior of SLF, has worked with him for a month in an ESC group, but she never realizes he can perform magic. “He makes me really admire him”, she said.

According to this non-professional magician, most of his performances were copied from the video clips on YouTube or reality shows without any training. Therefore, he may hurt himself anytime during his performance. He once nearly cut his tongue when he was trying to swallow a razor blade.

“I love magic, but it is not my primary care or money earning tool. I perform magic as I want to discover and learn the magic tricks. Besides, I like making people around me happy”, he said.

School of Foreign Languages at TVU began offering Korean language classes in 2015. The courses offered in the Korean Language program integrate cultural components into course materials by using authentic texts and audio-visual materials.

The School recently welcomes two teachers from the Department of History at Inha University in Incheon, Korea. We are proud to introduce the newly arrived teachers to our students.

  Lee Ra Hel

My name is Lee ra hel and I have lived in Incheon in Korea ever since I was born.

I am majoring in history at Inha University in Incheon.

I like learning about another country's traditions and history so I entered the History Department of inha University.

One of my favorite hobbies is climbing.

I can enjoy the feeling of achievement when I reach the peak of the mountain.

Before coming to Trà Vinh, I learned Vietnam history through Vietnam classes. The history of Vietnam was very interesting to me. I am happy that I can experience the culture of Vietnam directly in Trà Vinh.

I also want to learn more about Vietnam's diverse culture and history while I am in Trà Vinh.

I am looking forward to meeting more people from different countries with different cultures in Trà Vinh.

  Nahyeong Kim

Nahyeong Kim is a senior student majoring in History in Inha University. Despite a great passion in World History, her specific research interests focus on the history of Japan and Southeast Asia.

Nahyeong Kim earned a scholarship to Japan as an exchange student in 2017 for excellent student from her department. She is currently teaching Korean at Tra Vinh University. With her internship in Vietnam, she is hoping to introduce Korean cultures to Vietnamese students and learn Vietnamese lifestyles and cultures as well. More importantly, working Vietnam is a valuable opportunity for her to expand her field in the future.

If someone asks me about the most memorable experience in my student life at TVU – School of Foreign Languages, I am quite willing to talk about my trip when taking part in the Green Summer Volunteer Campaign.  This campaign started on 6thJuly 2018, and it lasted for about one month. Students joining this campaign are divided into various teams working in a wide range of volunteering activities.

Like other teams, we have about 40 members in our team and we went to a remote area to do volunteer work. . Our destination is Cau Ngang Dictrict – A small town in Tra Vinh city. The living condition here is still difficult. We helped them to prune off branches, build and upgrade nearly 3km of rural roads, clean up the streets, and grow trees. Besides, we also joined in the volleyball exchanges with the locals after hard-working days. Although these activities were very strenuous, we all found it's a great feeling.

In one month, we had done so many meaningful things to the local community that I've never done before. Everything was very novel and stimulating. Firstly, we had to learn how to behave ourselves with the locals, especially the elderly. This is quite a ‘difficult task’ for young people like us as we belong to different generations.  However, after a couple of days working together, we could get used to the way of living of local people. Since then, we found these people much friendlier than the urban residents.

In addition to the friendly people, the pace of life in here is quite slow and peaceful with fresh air of the countryside. I think this may be the reason why local people are so friendly and hospitable. Moreover, we had to learn how to stand on our feet. It means that we help ourselves arrange almost everything. We organized our work and we finally completed our mission well.

Obviously, the experience from this trip was fantastic and beyond my expectations. To be honest, I had decided to join this volunteer work just to get promotion in my grade. However, I realized that I could get much more than it. I could improve my communication skills, which is very important for my major. Besides, I have more new friends when working in a team with wonderful mates.

To sum up, the experiences I gained from the campaign were meaningful and exciting. It would have been a great regret if I hadn't taken part in this Campaign. I hope to be able to participate in such meaningful campaigns in the future. I also definitely recommend future students of TVU – School of Foreign Languages join other interesting volunteer activities organised by the School.
