TVU, 22 September 2016. The English Speaking Club (ESC) marked its return after the summer break with amusing Prayer Dance collectively performed by Vietnamese students, volunteers, and lecturers from America, France and Greek.

The topic of this first meeting is culture shock. After having performed the dance, participants exchanged their experiences in living in foreign countries. English majors showed their great interest in this topic by asking volunteers and lecturers from America, France and Greek a wide range of questions on their impressions on Vietnamese culture.

They talked about differences between the cultures in their home countries and their culture shock experiences when they first came to Vietnam, more specifically, Tra Vinh University (TVU).

Ms. Dorothee Dejardin, a French lecturer said: “I visited London 10 years ago, but I can recognize the difference between life and people in London and in Vietnam, people here in Vietnam are really friendly and nice.”

Following that activity, students shared their knowledge about other countries in the world through a game called Culture Identifying. They worked in groups and had to list 10 countries based on pictures representing the country’s culture.

Thai Tieu My, a senior from English Class said: “I am excited for tonight, every student is working hard for ESC and the foreign volunteers and teachers are really friendly. This really broadens our knowledge through cross- cultural conversations.”

ESC is founded by the School of Foreign Languages to create a fun and effective authentic English environment for students to improve their speaking skills and learn from each other. We welcome all of students every Thursday night, from 6:30pm – 8pm at B1 Building - Campus 1.
