Tra Vinh University, June 6 2018 – Nine senior English majors of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) successfully defended their undergraduate theses on Monday and Tuesday.

Ly Minh Thu, one of these majors, is a student of the advanced diploma program, while the others are bachelor’s degree holders. They include Lam Quang Phuc Binh, Ho Thi Diem, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen, Tran Thi Thao Nguyen, Nguyen Huu Phat, Trinh Hoang Son, Nguyen Huu Van Mi and Huynh Thi Diem Kieu. To be eligible to write an undergraduate thesis, students must have a grade point average above 2.8 in the 1.0 – 4.0 grading scale.

The students spent 10 weeks writing a thesis under their academic supervisor’s guidance. Additionally, they had to present and defend in front of the SFL examination board for 15 minutes.

This year’s thesis topics fell into different aspects of English-related fields including vocabulary enhancement, reading and British literature. However, Phuc Binh and Minh Thu displayed the originality in terms of the connection between the environmental awareness and English language acquisition, intercultural competence in English teaching.

“Among the nine dissertations, I am extremely impressed with two theses related to the relationship between environmental awareness and English language acquisition, strategies to deal with IELTS reading question types. Those are a breath of fresh air for further research of SFL students,” Khau Hoang Anh, M.A., deputy head of the English department, said.

Trinh Hoang Son, one of the nine presenters, said preparing his thesis is a great first step in his career path. “Thanks to my supervisor’s support, I have managed to overcome all the obstacles that have been placed in my thesis process,” Son said.
