In the 5th minute of the first-half in the semi-final, the SFL squad was whistled for playing the ball in the (11-metre) penalty area. The Medical striker put a hard shot from the penalty spot but ‘golden glove’ goalie Tieu My made a spectacular save. Searching for an equalizer in the second-half, the SFL team nearly tied the game when captain third-year Thu Trang tapped the ball to striker Thoai Ngan who fired a very strong shot on net from the distance, but the ball hit the post and deflected outside of the goal. The SFL squad almost quitted the third place match on the following Saturday morning when captain Thu Trang fainted after the tough semi-final game. It was apparently very hot day, and during the match she played the “Total Soccer” method of the Dutch. Yet appearing on the next morning for the third place match against the Education team, she looked fresh, stood outside the pitch to support her teammates to fight tooth and nail for the third place.
The SFL started aggressively, very often forcing the Education back line. Playing under the hard sun and on the sand-soccer field, goalie Tieu My kept the SFL off the score sheet to send her team to a penalty shoot-out.
From the penalty spot, the SFL squad sealed the third place victory when the shots of third-year strikers Thoại Ngân and To Quyen found the twine twice to the left of the hopeless goalie of the Education. Golden Glove Tieu My, who made three incredible saves in the penalty shoot-out, and four strikers led the SFL to their 4-1 victory over the Education School.
‘The girls are amazing,’ said mentor Ho Van Minh. ‘In total our team scored 14 goals in 5 games, all of them have grown like crazy.’
